Setting up Homelink with a Liftmaster garage door opener in a Dodge Charger can be more frustrating than expected, but once you know the steps, it’s pretty straightforward. If you’re struggling with it like I did, here’s exactly how I managed to get mine working after a few attempts.
First, make sure your car is parked near the garage and that your Liftmaster remote is ready to go. You’ll be using it in the programming process. Before doing anything, ensure your Liftmaster garage door opener is compatible with Homelink. Most newer models are, but if you’ve got an older one, it might require a special compatibility bridge, so it’s worth checking the manual if you're not sure.
To start programming, get inside your Charger and locate the Homelink buttons, which are usually on the overhead console near the rearview mirror. You should see three buttons. First, hold down the two outer buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until the indicator light begins to blink rapidly, which usually takes about 20-30 seconds. This step essentially clears any previous codes that might be stored in the system, so you’re starting with a fresh slate.
Once the light starts blinking, you’re ready to program. Take the Liftmaster remote in one hand and hold it close to the Homelink buttons, ideally just a few inches away from the mirror. To do this, get out of your car and head over to your garage door opener motor, which is usually mounted on the ceiling. On the back or side of the unit, there should be a button labeled "Learn" or "Program." Press this button once (you might need a ladder depending on how high the motor is mounted), and then return to your Charger within 30 seconds.
